What is Hypnotherapy/Hypnosis?
Hypnotherapy uses a variety of hypnotic inductions to induce the natural phenomenon
of trance states as a therapeutic tool in dealing with emotional and psychological problems. Inductions can vary and can include visualisation and breathing techniques for example. In addition, a wide range of other highly effective techniques are used and combined within the therapeutic setting, working on cognitive, emotional and sometimes behavioural levels in order to achieve the best possible outcome.
Hypnosis “is a state of relaxation and concentration
with heightened awareness and increased
receptiveness to positive suggestions.”
It is completely natural for us to experience hypnotic
trance states every day. If you have ever had the
experience of:
• Driving along on a routine journey and arriving at
your destination with no conscious memory of
passing particular places.
• Reading a good book and becoming so absorbed
in it that you are not aware of your surroundings.
• Daydreaming and feeling “far away in your
thoughts’’,then you have already experienced
hypnosis.
You will be guided into this pleasant, enjoyable and
relaxing state of hypnosis for the purpose of therapy.
Hypnosis itself is not the therapy but a tool in
therapy. It allows a client to access the
subconscious mind fast and direct and makes
therapy very effective.
Other techniques and therapies
include:
NLP (Neuro-linguistic Programming) is a very
powerful and effective tool in identifying thinking
strategies and in engineering change of behaviour
pattern and assist in personal development.
EFT or ‘Tapping method’ is especially useful for
addressing and changing emotional/affective
issues. EMDR is used also for releasing emotional
and Trauma related problems.

The Therapy
There are different approaches which are
specifically devised to suit your personal problems,
making appropriate use of above mentioned
techniques, and these in turn form two major
strands of therapy:
• Suggestion Therapy
• Analytical Hypnotherapy
Suggestion Therapy,often in connection with
NLP and EFT is usually used for less complex
problems such as smoking, losing weight, pre-test
nerves, confidence building etc., and is tailor-made
for each client, taking into account the uniqueness
of each individual. It
usually requires between one
and three sessions.
Analytical Hypnotherapy –
Psychotherapy, EFT (Tapping) or EMDR
is used to successfully treat more complex
psychological problems and concentrates on
finding the root cause of symptoms and
inappropriate behaviour patterns. As a rule every
symptom must have a cause. It is often that an
important emotional event is linked to a current
pattern or problem, like a phobia or anxiety for
example, an issue which a person may not even be
aware of. Hypnoanalysis can lead to a total release
from symptoms by revealing and removing
originating causes. By enabling past
events to be re-examined and the emotion released,
the symptoms and inappropriate patterns of
behaviour can cease to exist. Analysis is also
indicated to prevent ‘Symptom Replacement’ ,
i.e. one symptom is removed, but if an underlying
problem is not addressed, it manifests itself in a
new symptom.
HYPNOANALYSIS USUALLY REQUIRES
EIGHT TO TWELVE SESSIONS.

Myth and Misconceptions
Unfortunately there are many myth and
misconceptions surrounding the hypnosis which in fact has a long and recognised
history as a powerful and yet gentle tool for positive change in the therapeutic setting.
The following is aiming to clarify some of
these
Will I be asleep when in hypnosis?
No. You are fully aware of your surroundings and
can hear everything that the therapist says to you at
all times. In fact you have to be conscious in order to follow the therapist’s instructions. You will be in a daydream-like state in which the subconscious mind becomes more open to positive and helpful
suggestions.
Will I lose control?
Absolutely not. The client is at all times in total
control as all hypnosis is really self-hypnosis, with
the therapist only acting as a guide. The client alone
is responsible for how much he responds to the therapist’s suggestions and trance will not be
achieved without the clients will.
Can I be influenced to do anything against
my will?
Again the answer is no. Anything suggested to you
in hypnosis that is against your beliefs, morals,
religion, ethics, wants or desires will simply be
rejected by you. It
is impossible for you to be made
to do anything against your will.
Are there any dangers I should be aware of?
None whatsoever. Hypnosis is a proven therapeutic
tool with no side effects.

 |
Are there people that cannot be hypnotised?
Theoretically everyone can be hypnotised as long
as they are genuinely willing and allow themselves
to follow instructions. Difficulties usually result
from resistance and blocks which can and need
to be addressed within a session. Exceptions are
people with severe mental illnesses and mental
disabilities who would not be able to follow
instructions. So, anyone can be hypnotised and the
depth to trance achieved varies from
person to person.
Can I learn to use self-hypnosis?
Yes, It is a part of Hypnotherapy to teach a client
self-hypnosis, so that he can continue his improvement through positive suggestions both during sessions and even after the therapy has
ended.
NOTE: HYPNOTHERAPY/ANALYSIS CAN
HELP IN NUMEROUS CASES. BUT NO
THERAPY IS A MAGIC CURE-ALL, IT NEEDS
YOUR COMMITMENT. YOU NEED TO
INVEST TIME, EFFORT, SELF-DISCIPLINE

What Hypnotherapy can do
for you
Examples
Stop Smoking
Highly successful, effective and personalised stop smoking sessions: Success can be achieved in just
one session. The length of a session can be about
two hours. This time allows for tailoring to each
unique client’s requirement and addressing any
issues related to smoking in order to prevent
symptom replacement. All the client has
to bring is
a deep and genuine desire to become a non-smoker.
Weight loss
A variety of techniques are combined to help with
desired slimming. Again, different clients have
different issues that need to be assessed case by case.
Being ‘addicted’ to a particular food is to be treated
differently than general over-eating or binging, for
example. A client needs to understand that it is
easier to give up something that is not vital for
living i.e. smoking or chocolate, than food in
general.
